Hi Derrick and all,
<snip mal contact between the CPU and heatsink
been broken by the impact the computer received during transit !
Unfortunately quite common in machines that have been mishandled !
PL] it was not the thermal compound but the clips that held the heatsink to the
motherboard. One of the clips was cracked so the contact between the heatsink
and the motherboard was not proper. My vendor though first tried his solution of
putting some foam behind the motherboard in case there was a short circuit
between the motherboard and the chassis. This did not produce any result. He
then tried replacing the mother board which was a complete waste of time since
the Intel active monitor did not even run on that board. He finally took my
suggestion of checking the heat sync which is when we found the cracked clip.
The heat sync is a metal box like structure which feels like a grill with a fan
on it. I did not see any thermal compound anywhere.
Windows 2000 survived with barely a scratch. I had to do some fiddling with the
sound card drivers but that panned out ok. The whole exercise took 4 hours but I
had to shell out only Rs. 600 (1$=46 Rs.) and more than that, no system rebuild
required!
There is no provision in the cabinet for a front panel fan but I will ensure
that my next computer has proper cooling.
As for the temperatures:
Processor zone=55 degrees C, system zone1=40 degrees C and system zone2=34
degrees C.
Thanks all again
Pranav
