It must have had some bang to crack the clip ! But in any event once
the thermal joint has been broken, there is no way that you can get
back to normal cooling without replacing the compound between the
mating faces.

The thermal compound is a very thin film and can be difficult to see.
Artic silver is a good replacement. Its expensive, but a 2gm tube
will serve for at least 50 to 70 CPU's

I'm glad it worked out fine.

Simply adding fans is not the best way to ensure proper cooling.
Belive me! Stretch some cling film over the case in place of the
metal side and allow smoke to flow across the case and you will see
what I mean !
