This looks a little like what I have when I shut down 'fwin'. My Gnome 
desktop (Redhat7.0, X4.0.1) is also gray, but I can 'cure' it with a resizing 
of a window, after switching desktops everything is fine again.
Strange that you have problems while using the same X version as you used 
before. Maybe you don't have problems with X4.0.2/X4.0.1? 

What I do to avoid this: After selecting 'shut down Windows' (and pressing 
Enter), I switch as fast as possible back to my Gnome session (F7). This way 
the problem does not occur.
Maybe try that...?
