This problem (grey hash, dead keyboard, etc) occurs for me with XFree 4.x.
After downgrading to XFree 3.3.6, everything works fine.
This may be specific to a particular graphics card (I'm using a Voodoo3).
Mandrake 7.2 includes both 3.3.6 and 4.0, but there isn't any nifty
utility to switch between them. You either have to make the right choice
at installation time, or manually switch them.
