unfortunately, my first attempt *was* with 4.0.  sorry, i should not
have left that out of the problem report.  i don't know what X i was
running before (it was version 3.3 i think, but not sure if it was
3.3.6).  i am using kde and you get this with gnome, which seems to
indicate not a WM issue?

Interesting.  I'll give that a try.  Anyone from netraverse have any
ideas?
