In case you don't know, using dump on a mounted filesystem is generally
problematic (not just under Linux, nor is this filesystem specific), if
it's under load, chances are you'll get an inconsistent filesystem and
possibly corrupted or lost files.
Under Linux, specifically, definitely with ext2/3 possibly with other
filesystems, in the near future, the 2.4.X series of kernels will keep
various structures (directories, etc) in the page cache which in turn
uses the buffer cache. Dump accesses the device through the buffer
cache, so it won't necessarily get consistent/up-to-date data.
Linus has been quoted (in his typical style :) stating something to the
effect that it's broken, it's always been broken, and it'll get even
more broken.
So, even if dump has and does work for you, don't expect it to continue
to do so....
