The detailed discussion on wage and spending freezes in our schools and
colleges brings out the question - is this really what we want to be doing?
In my understanding of the future of the community, the state, the nation,
and the world, there is one overriding element that will insure success in
the local and global marketplaces, and that is EDUCATION. Two of the most
fascinating books I have read in the past couple years (and which I highly
recommend) - "The Lexus and the Olive Tree" by Thomas Friedman, and "As the
Future Catches You" by Juan Enriquez - both analyze world trends and
conclude that education, education, and education are the best predictors of
a society's chances at success.

Gov. Pawlenty and many legislators have said "no tax increase". It's fair
to ask the next question: would you the taxpayer be willing to pay $X to
insure that there is no tuition hike for WSU students? Or no canceling of
after-school enrichment programs? Pick a program, put the dollars to it and
divide it by the average taxpayer. When put in real terms the "no-tax"
pledge softens considerably for many people. I would urge everyone,
including Gov. Pawlenty and the legislature, to put these numbers on the
table and have a frank discussion on them.

I've got a $20 bill in my pocket right now that I would gladly part with if
I knew valuable education programs would be spared, and the next
generation - whether kindergartners or college students - would have a
better opportunity for a good education. I'll bet I could come up with that
extra $20 every month. If all average taxpayers in the state would agree to
the same (through their legislators and the governor's signature), I think
we just came up with about $400 million. It's all about choices.
