I, too, am enjoying the mass transit discussion. This has been a pet peeve
of mine for many years. "Business hour buses" do not, I think, do all we
need out buses to do.

I am also old enough to remember getting on a bus with my Mom in Front of
Faith Lutheran on Howard...I grew up next door to the old parsonage. But we
became a two car family by the time I was seven or eight, so I don't have
many of those memories.

Buses are still important for many Winonans...kids, seniors, and yes
commuters, too. I know for certain that we need to offer service to folks
who work third shift and other odd hours. How many people can't take a
night shift because they don't have reliable transportation of their own?
Maybe the workforce center knows the answer to that one. If its a
significant number, then maybe three-shift manufacturers would help
subsidize the service.

Why don't we run service to Fountain City? Or would we want to build a park
and ride lot somewhere in Wisconsin? How about in Homer for folks driving
in from the south? Ditto Minnesota City...keep as many cars out of Winona
and Goodview as possible. Perhaps closer in at retail areas so folks could
pick up some milk before they go home? Just some thoughts...but I would
think some folks would be willing to park and take a bus if they dont have
to worry about finding parking when they get to work or wherever. Some
older folks who live in the country also refuse to drive "in town." They
might use a park and ride service.

Ideally, of course, we would rebuild the streetcars, too, but that will
never happen. I have a 1930 City Engineer's map of Winona showing all the
light rail lines...they went from High Forest to Lee Street! They followed
Fifth and Howard, as did the bus routes that followed their removal...there
was also a Sanborn Line in the east end.
That would certainly add to our city's historic character, but it aint
happenin'.

Unfortunately, Governor Pawlenty's budget includes significant cuts for
outstate transit.

Eric Sorenson is the man to talk to about buses. I have been complaining
about the limited bus hours for years. This discussion has broadened my
interest in transit issues.
