[Winona Online Democracy] I appreciate John Finn pointing out the article on rain gardens. It is important to note that rain gardens are really not experimental any more, and that the folks at Bonestroo (talented though they are) certainly did not invent them. They are in use in many areas around the country, with many examples that I know of here in the Twin Cities, and some amazingly clever adaptations in Europe and elsewhere. Rain gardens are not just for parking lots, but for any kind of surface runoff, to let it filter in slowly before it gets to the lake, river, or stream downstream. Rain gardens do what a stormwater detention pond does, but without the standing water, and with the added benefits of more filtering of pollutants, more infiltration into the ground water, and often some pretty flowers to look at. They more closely mimic the natural systems that we have replaced with all our urbanized impervious surfaces.
The acknowledged masters of this art form are the German landscape/engineering/artist studio Atelier Dreiseitl who have numerous examples on their web site: http://www.dreiseitl.de/engl.htm - Phil Carlson, Mpls -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of John N.
