[Winona Online Democracy]

I have been reading everyone's posts, and I feel relieved to learn that so
many subscribers to WOD are voicing their opposition to the Walmart
behemoth. For me, in addition to the tax and labor concerns already
expressed, the Walmart issue comes to this: would I rather save a few bucks,
or would I rather have a neighbor?

I believe that other big box corporations-particularly Target- will survive
if Walmart comes to town. However, if Walmart includes a grocery store, I
fear at least one of our locally-owned groceries may fold. Other locally
owned stores that sell the same items that Walmart sells could also be
threatened. I perceive these local business owners to be my neighbors. Like
Terry Hyle, I was never turned down when I went from business to business
asking for donations for Central School's PTA. The corporate businesses,
however, either had to ask permission from the corporate office, or turned
the request down because of bureaucratic rules. In addition, local
businesses support most of the non-profits in town. So why are they so
generous?

These local business owners have a tremendous stake in the prosperity of our
community, and they generously contribute time and time again to schools,
kids' sports, and other organizations that improve the quality of life in
Winona. They live here. Our children may attend school together, or we may
attend the same church or service organization.
I also know that when I regularly shop at a local business, I become a
valued customer. If I ever have a problem with a product or a service, I
know that owner will do right by me because we have a mutual
relationship-I'm not anonymous. On the other hand, the management at the
superstores don't know their customers so well. In addition, profits are
sent out of town, rather than remaining right here. (The exception here may
be Target, which contributes a percentage of its profits to the local
community.)

So, If I have the choice between saving a few bucks or having a neighbor who
is connected to the local community both socially and economically, I'll
choose the neighbor every time. Where's that petition!
