My apologies for editing Mr. Dittman's and Chief Pomeroy's postings out of
context, but I'm curious about the "jake brake" issue.

A couple of years ago this was brought up in a city council meeting by
Dieter Mielimonka responding to constituents complaints. Chief Pomeroy said
that the city wasn't enforcing the anti-jake brake ordinance until a couple
of lawsuits by truckers in other Minnesota towns was resolved. Actually,
what had happened was that the League of Minnesota Cities organization had
recommended repealing jake brake laws lest towns make themselves vulnerable
to such lawsuits. That is why in Minnesota you now see "motor vehicle noise
laws enforced" instead of jake-brake specific signs.

So, even though there are no longer "jake brake" signs posted, are we again
prohibiting jake brakes? (BTW, the Jacobs Brake Company insists that towns
use the term "dynamic brakes" in order to protect their trade mark) Or are
we taking action based on decibel readings of noisy trucks?

Jacobs' web site has much opinion on why the lack of mufflers is the problem
rather than the use of their product:

If we are now able to deal with trucks lacking proper exhaust systems, is it
too much to hope for that our police department can do something about the
harley bikers?
