I think there has been some good discussion on the best way to communicate one's opinion. I did not think of the Big Brother line as an attack on Kathy until Kathy expressed her interpretation of it. I would suggest that in all basic communication classes, we all learned the responsibility of good communication falls on the person who is delivering the message. We do not know exactly how the Big Brother message was intended but I am sure each one of us interpreted in different ways. How a message is interpreted is usually based on our emotion and past experience. It is difficult for people to remove past experience from helping them formulate an opinion on an issue. I like Phil Carlson's thoughts regarding the rules of U S State Senate. Certainly, these people are continually debating issues they feel strongly about. I do not think there is a problem with WOD adapting this rule and having people adhere to it. It makes good sense. I give Kathy a lot of credit for trying to come up with a rule that everyone can interpret the same way. As Kathy interpreted the Big Brother comment to mean she is trying to watch over people and control their thoughts as the book suggests, I did not take it that far and interpreted it as someone needs to monitor the choice of words being used to express what is on their minds. These are two very different interpretations, I agree with the latter. The Sendate guidelines help us keep mindful of how to do this.
