I always kind of liked the plaza downtown...there was a referendum before its removal, correct?  I'm remembering there was...and me opposing it...and me admitting freely years later that I was wrong and it was a good thing to get rid of it.  I always wanted to play chess on one of those little tables they had down there...I never did...

I think the plaza was worth the try at the time...nothing else was working...just be thankful we never went ahead with the idea of putting a roof over Third Street...they did that in Mankato when Penney's and the local department store, Brett's, were still downtown...the mall on the the hill still won.

What can we do downtown?  How about a renovated Old Middle School auditorium?  How about a local historic district encompassing the current national districts?  How about a riverfront convention center with an hotel that could also be home to the Shakespeare Festival?  How about dropping a parking ramp into that big lot at Second and Center?  These are some of my favorites...our city government, God bless 'em, has a terrifically low level of bonded indebtedness...we could choose to invest in our downtown...but how?

And, no...I'm not running for anything...smiles
