I've only lived here for eight years and only vaguely remember seeing Winona's mall during a brief visit in the 80's. Downtown development since I've been here seems to be lacking the type of pedestrian amenities and aesthetic enhancements that were elements in downtown mall projects and I wonder how long it will be until Winona is willing to try other approaches to improving downtown's look and feel.

Back in the 70's I lived in Boulder, Colorado when that city created its downtown pedestrian mall and it has been a fabulous success. But Boulder is probably such a unique situation that it has little relevance to most other towns.

The pedestrian mall on Third Street was considered "state-of-the-art" when it was built, and many cities did similar things......  In the 30 to 40 years since these things were done, almost all of them around the country have been taken out, just like Winona's.
