I am not going to speak for the county board but I believe the reason they became involved in the Wilson annexation was due to the fact* that the city would be using a county road to access this annexation.   I think I do have a valid* response in saying that people who live in the country prefer township government because of the 'closeness' of having a local government.  How much does it cost the city of Winona for fire and rescue each year? Our departments are volunteers.  Yes, we have a fire and rescue budget and I wish I had the figures in front of me for our township. I have been told that Wilson spends less than 80,000.00 per year to cover 36 square miles with these services. How does this compare with the city budget?  Township government is essential to our way of life in the country and I would fight tooth and nail to preserve it.   If there were no longer townships who would pay people 24/7 to take care of fire and rescue in the enter county?   The snow plow for our township (one snowplow, one grader) is run by a man who does an outstanding job.  I can hear him out there at 2 in the morning. Am I going to get that service at the same cost* if I am a citizen of Winona? or any other city for that matter, no longer having townships.  We may not always get everything we want out of government.
