Title: Re: [Winona] Referendum

Terry/All:
Currently... I am taxed $112 for the existing referendum and $185 for the middle school.  I would "love" an increase of only $200.

I don't want to make a decision off of numbers the district dials up.  I don't want to have to cough up $700 before I can vote to maintain buildings and then after I've spent $800 I can approve another $100 so schools can have computers from this century.

The referendum questions are too unyielding - and I don't remember a school referendum that was written in plain English.

I'm dealing with old numbers here...  but in 2002, 85 percent of the school budget was wages. It's tough to know how much you're going to need when you don't have a teacher contract settled.

The other daunting number (and old as well) is that only 17 percent of the community has a connection to the school district (i.e. -kids or grandkids in school). that number may have grown with fewer students.

Rochester just settled its teacher contract for a 2 percent raise.  Two percent each of the contract's two years will cost 10 percent with benefits.  Benefits - mainly health insurance- are incredibly expensive and no union wants to lessen its benefits.

Starbucks just announced it spends more money on health insurance than it does on coffee.

I'm not willing to spend $5 for a cup of coffee and now the district is hoping I'll spend $3 a day for the referendum. Apparently - if folks are actually considering this referendum - a lot of people have extra money in their budget.  I'm busy trying to figure out how I'll afford $3 a gallon gas, a 60 percent higher heating bill and a property tax bill that is already going to increase from city and county.

What do others think of throwing in a lesser amount ($100???) as an option to help ensure passage of at least a bread and water diet?
I know it complicates the issue somewhat, but if $200 is viewed as excessive, and rejected, 861's future will be pretty bleak.

They have info. sheets for this and for what the money would be used for and for what they will do if it isn't passed.  I will try to get those to post.
For now -- as an example --

On a $100,000 house:
  • Question #1 will raise taxes $200 per year
  • Question #2 by $99
  • Question #3 by $117

(Data from a sheet handed out by WAPS staff last week)

This is all well and good, but, how much will it cost the individual Home owner, or Farm Owner???   Bob K
