Title: Re: [Winona] Referendum

I don't know about them reading it, but I read it twice and am keeping it for reference.

So the actual impact on Question 1 is $293.  WAPS is trying to paint the most positive picture it can. And I don't blame them... In unvarnished figures, it reads like this...

On a $100,000 house:
  • Question #1 will raise taxes $293 per year
  • Add Question #2 it will be $392 per year
  • Add Question #3 it will cost $509 per year.

There are very few homes in the Winona school district taxed under the $100,000 figure.  Using simple math and increasing the home figure to $150,000. I come up with these numbers

On a $150,000 house:
  • Question #1 will raise taxes $439 per year
  • Add Question #2 it will be $588 per year
  • Add Question #3 it will cost $763 per year.

I understand the city would like to tax shoppers in the city for street improvements and the county is having its own challenges living within its budget.

The total tax package can't be added up, but getting the voters volunteer to pay - for just the school portion of the tax package, (using the $763 figure) $2 a day... $15 a week or $63 a month - shows that the school board's reality check has bounced.

The WAPS info. says that on a $100,000 house the revoked levy would cut the tax by $93; approval of Question #1 would levy $293 for a net annual increase of $200.
All of this is supposed to be posted on the WAPS site next week.

Craig, any info on how much the current override was costing (and will drop off) for the owner of a $100,000 house?

They have info. sheets for this and for what the money would be used for and for what they will do if it isn't passed.  I will try to get those to post.
For now -- as an example --

On a $100,000 house:
  • Question #1 will raise taxes $200 per year
  • Question #2 by $99
  • Question #3 by $117

(Data from a sheet handed out by WAPS staff last week)
