> What sort of output do i need to get 11mpbs over 1.6 miles? A-ha! Something on which I may offer input.
Try playing with the spreadsheet at http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/102/us-calc.xls. I used this spreadsheet to play with the parameters (AP, antennas, cord, etc) I was using. You'll need to unprotect the sheet in order to really play with it (Tools/Protection/Protect Sheet... In Excel..there's no password required). You'll see a note on the spreadsheet saying it's configured for "U.S. models using +20dBm". However, I believe you can modify that value by unhiding and modifying E39, J39 and L39. Using this spreadsheet, you can indicate the AP you're using, target datarate, transmitting and receiving antenna types, length of antenna wires, etc, and it will calculate the estimated, maximum distance. If your AP is not listed (if it's not a Cisco for example), then choose one that's similar (e.g.: Cisco AIR-BR340 has similar properties to the Linksys WAP11), or add your own using the cells and formulas at Q5:S10. If you can't use Excel (due to OS), or are unable to modify the spreadsheet (due to complexity), then I guess my contribution will be pretty unhelpful. :-) Good Luck, Jeff -- general wireless list, a bawug thing <http://www.bawug.org/> [un]subscribe: http://lists.bawug.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless
