What's confusing to me about 802.16 (or WiMax, if you like buzz words) is the claim of up to 50km/30miles in range. The range of an EM wave depends on the power the wave was transmitted and the sensitivity of the recieving antenna. In a vacuum the distance is infinite. Also, part of 802.16 will be operating in the 11-60GHz range and signals attenuate more rapidly at higher frequencies. I'm not an expert but there's something called "skin depth" which is the distance in which the wave loses 1/e power (about a third). This is approximately wavelength/2*pi for a non conducting medium (such as air). So the attenuation for higher frequencies is much greater.
