What's confusing to me about 802.16 (or WiMax, if you like buzz words) is the claim
of up to 50km/30miles in range.

The range of an EM wave depends on the power the wave was transmitted and
the sensitivity of the recieving antenna. In a vacuum the distance is infinite. 

Also, part of 802.16 will be operating in the 11-60GHz range and signals attenuate 
more rapidly
at higher frequencies. I'm not an expert but there's something called "skin depth" 
which
is the distance in which the wave loses 1/e power (about a third). This is 
approximately wavelength/2*pi
for a non conducting medium (such as air). So the attenuation for higher frequencies 
is much greater.
