I suppose a short cable on the bench might do it but not in the field reliably. In my experience, in order to get a reliable connection over cat 3, I had to lock down the switch ports to 10Mbps. I would never claim to know it all but I've been around the block a time or two. The windings are to cancel out EMF which can cause errors that affect speed due to transmission retries.
