Actually, you can make it so you have to approve people before they can follow you. Look for 'Protect My Updates' on twitter settings IIRC.

Users can deal with putting themselves on the list, getting off, changing their phone number, etc. All without your intervention. Of course, folks that aren't customers can get on a list, but that probably isn't really a big problem since anything you broadcast to your customers can't really be considered secret at that point.
