Actually, you can make it so you have to approve people before they can
follow you.
Look for 'Protect My Updates' on twitter settings IIRC.

The other nice thing about twitter for notification is that it's very self
service. Users can deal with putting themselves on the list, getting off,
changing their phone number, etc. All without your intervention. Of
course, folks that aren't customers can get on a list, but that probably
isn't really a big problem since anything you broadcast to your customers
can't really be considered secret at that point.

If you know the carrier you can send it just like an email. For example to
send to a verizon number is [email protected]. You would have to get your
customers to tell you who their carrier is, and you would have to know the
email-text domain for that carrier. They are all different. Otherwise,
twitter sounds good.

+1: Any reason not to just use twitter?

We use twitter.

Customers who are interested in network status updates can follow the
Twitter page, and subscribe to text messages.

When there's a problem you just tweet manually or use API for automated
things.

Does anyone use or know of an application or service for sending bulk text
messages. We would like a one time pay vs. pay per message. What we would
like to accomplish is create a group message for network status alerts that
go out via text message to customers that wish to receive such.
