You can still have targeted announcements, you can send direct messages over
twitter.

You are correct though, your customer list is available for anyone to
see-not sure if protecting your tweets will hide your followers from
non-followers.
There is definitely no way to prevent other followers from seeing each
other.

The reason is that you want to have targeted announcements.

You dont want to remind customers that are running reliably, that you
constantly have problems on other parts of your network, when you need to
notify those other parts of your network.

I also dont want customers putting themselves on lists, because I want to
make sure they are only on the lists that will apply to them, and they might
not have the inside knowledge to know which lists those are. I also dont
want competitors on the list, seeing info that isn't any of their business.

+1: Any reason not to just use twitter?

We use twitter.

Customers who are interested in network status updates can follow the
Twitter page, and subscribe to text messages.

When there's a problem you just tweet manually or use API for automated
things.

Does anyone use or know of an application or service for sending bulk text
messages. We would like a one time pay vs. pay per message. What we would
like to accomplish is create a group message for network status alerts that
go out via text message to customers that wish to receive such.
