Though I agree Twitter is probably the right mechanism for the OP, if you want to do direct SMS, also consider a standard GSM modem as an alternative to the MultiTech SMS servers.

Search for wavecom modem. Sierra Wireless now holds it. There are a number of open source apps that will send SMS using these modems. I use one for network monitoring alerts.
