Hello Alex ... no an octet is 8 bits long and the term is used to describe the
portions of an IP address or subnet mask... with IPv4 the address length is 4 octets
long i.e. 255.255.255.255. this term is used in place of byte which may also be 8bits
but byte is used to describe data and octet is used to describe ip addresses

HELLO !!!

Just a quick question?

What exactly is an OCTET ?????

I was looking into the 802.11b standard, wondering the length of teh PSDU frame.

PSDU = [variable 0 - 4095 octects] --> so i think

is OCTECT = BYTE ??????

or

4095 l = 2125 bits

= (4 x 83) + (0 x 82) + (9 x 81) +(5 x 80)

= 2048 + 0 +72 +5 = 2125

= 2125 bits

SORRY TO WASTE UR TIME, BUT IAN'T FAMILIAR with the term!

thanks

ALex
