AHA! Just dawned on me as I browsed past this higher mathematical derivation for the umpteenth time - and saw the question: "i just wonder how u got to this sum" in response.
Ze mystery eez sol-ved! The derivation is an attempt to convert 4095 from OCTAL to decimal. Octal is base EIGHT, having NOTHING to do w/ an IP ocTET! Furthermore, in octal you cannot have any digits above a 7, so a number like 4095 is clearly NOT octal because it has a 9! Another clue that it's most likely decimal already (as opposed to hex or something) is the co-inki-dink that 4095 is ONE LESS than the 12th power of 2. Powers of two should pretty much jump out at you waving a red flag or something, as should all the predecessors thereof. I feel a lecture coming on - so I'd better go pour myself a fizzy. Now, that wasn't so easy, was it?
