Hi Christian, I've read quite a few articles on the graphics card issue. Microsoft suggests a minimum 128MB card for running Aero, and a minimum 64MB to run the OS without Aero. I thought with a 256MB card and a GPU I'd be pretty good since I was flying in XP! The performance is good with a 256MB card, don't get me wrong. My card is AGP, so I don't know if a PCIE card would be faster.
I really don't play games on my PC (that's what my XBOX is for), so I thought 256MB for applications was great. Maybe when the 512MB cards come down in price (Roughly $349.00 ~ $500.00 CAD now) I may consider getting a new card. Although Microsoft suggests a 1.5Ghz processor to run Vista (800mhz minimum) I don't recommend anything less than a 2.0ghz for sanity sake! That seems to sum up most Windows releases. I find it surprising that if you read that article they really don't recommend running Aero with 256mb or graphics card memory. Seems crazy but graphics card manufacturers will be happy. I was running Vista Ultimate final for a month in VMWare with all sorts of network loads and never had any problems. This was prior to my clean install of the host last week. I have a 256mb nVidia card too, running a 30inch display (2560x1600) with Aero and I find it much faster and more responsive then when I was running XP on the same machine for the last 3 months. But of course I have 4Gb ram and 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, and yes Vista loves that kind of power :-) It's not perfect yet, but I'm surprised there aren't more problems. One bummer is the Windows Mobile Device apparently doesn't support my 3 year old PocketPC :-( As for the Admin prompts, which are similar to Mac OSX, you do know that you can turn them off? Look in your Account settings. I was surprised that Outlook 2007 is so stable compared to 2003. That used to crash for me 2 or 3 times a day, but I haven't had a single crash with Outlook 2007 yet. Windows Explorer sure got a serious upgrade with some nice features, like auto-archiving previous versions of your user files - just like built-in SourceSafe. It's still early days, but I think I really like this.
