I have to correct myself, japanese ist only rendered when I use
'-*-fixed-medium-r-*-*-10-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-*'. Here's a screenshot:

Oh hm, but you have japanese rendered, so maybe it's something
different. Tobias, you said "the same font" works in a terminal, how
do you know this? What terminal, what font?
