That's right, Mike... Some time after starting the Win 10 episode and much of swearing all around, I disabled automatic updates. And perhaps I caught some update that troubled least. Looks like a risky workaround but I don't need to reinstall DAX drivers at random and the OP's issue doesn't show up.
