I'll repeat what I said before. I believe if you configure WSJT-X as
described in the User Guide and the referenced paper, its behavior will
be as it should be.
You have not said if you are using CAT control. If YES, and you choose
"Own Echo", you'll see your dial frequency change from Rx to Tx. On 6m,
Doppler shifts are small enough that you don't need to use CAT control.
In that case WSJT-X will do Echo-mode Doppler control in software, at
audio frequencies.
In either case, the echo peak in the Echo graph should be centered at 0.
SNR measurements are made only for a peak centered at 0. The "-99 dB"
you are seeing means that there is no peak centered at 0, and this means
something is not being done correctly.

Lance, Thanks – but the issue is that the operation and displayed
results – changed! It first was showing, on the Echo graph centered (0).
And at the same time it showed on the wide graph as the echo was where
it should be – i.e. 1596Hz for a 96Hz echo doppler shift. And it decoded
a signal with a level provided (-14.6, twice, w/ a Q of 10!).
But then later – w/o changing anything other than time (i.e. later)… the
echo showed on the Echo graph at -93 Hz (now the expected echo was 93
Hz)… the wide graph showed it just above 1500Hz and although there was
clearly an echo – the tabulated results remained at a level of -99.9!
This is all clear in the screen shot if anyone wants to see it.
After reading the doc I did see that it was set to “on own echo”. I
changed that to “none” and now it seems to work as expected – the echo
is now at 1576Hz on the wide graph and is at +76Hz on the Echo graph –
and it gave a proper numeric value (this time -20.3).
So again – its that it changed and when it changed it was no longer
functional as, even though the echo was clearly there, the value for SNR
was ‘stuck’ at -99.9.

Hi Gary,
I have not followed the ECHO mode documentation, but it may be that on
the Wide
Graph, you see the trace coming back as doppler shifed, but (at least in
previous
versions) the ECHO mode moves the frequency around, along with its
receiver, and just
displays the sum total of the average echoes received. The program knows
where it is
transmitting, so knows where to listen for the signal. I don't think you
need to pay
any attention to what is shown on the Wide Graph...GL and VY 73, Lance
