Do you ever rely on auto-launching of XQuartz or do you simply launch the server once (say from the Dock) and open some standard, personalised session in it? In the latter case I'd figure out how to go back to using just a standard DISPLAY=:0 variable (I think that's just a matter of unloading and removing the XQuartz launchd plists but it's been a looong time since I last did this).
