All of this growth comes from increased topography details (like
labels for small towns).  We had a discussion on IRC on this a while
ago; my point was that I don't need to know the names of small towns
in crowded areas like Germany, but there is a need for that in
less-populated areas like Australia.

I'm not sure if our map generator devs are still on it, but it is
always a good idea to remind us ...

Sounds reasonable.  Submit a feature request ticket
(http://www.xcsoar.org/trac/newticket).

Maybe a solution would be to generate several versions of each area;
high and low-res terrain, high and low on topography details.
