An SD card should not carry a significant risk of failure. In the case of
pre-WM5 devices (such as the 3870 and 3970, which have only 64MB of memory
to share between program and storage memory), by storing the data files on
the main memory you reduce the program memory available for XCSoar. Over
time, as IGC files are saved to the device, the pool of program memory
diminishes further. By keeping program and data on a storage card you ensure
that the same amount of program memory is available for XCSoar each time it
runs. This should have a much greater influence on long-term device
stability.

(However, the 3800 has an exceptionally slow SD card reader. Better to use a
compactflash sleeve if you can find one..)
