If you are thinking about XML on the Internet as a way of getting away from
EDI on VANs, it seems to me you are thinking inside the box
(conventionally). XML is about on-line messaging that unites applications
across company lines (and within a company). There are big productivity
gains to be had with on-line integration of systems.
For many of your messaging needs, EDI likely works fine. Maybe you'll move
your EDI over the Internet to save transmission charges, but otherwise keep
using it.

There is an article in the 6/26 edition of Energy Central Strategy Report
that covers the VAN versus Internet for E-Commerce/EDI.
The report is located at: http://www.8760.com/ecsr.pdf
