Glen: 1/The VAN can go away, but separate the message standard from the
transport. XML can be sent through a VAN, over the internet, through a VPN
(e.g. ANX)or lease line. The choice is up to you and potentially your
trading partner.
2/The nice thing about standards is there are so many to choose from and XML
is no different. You may ask your trading partner if they are using a
particular "standard" to develop their transaction. several are emerging
e.g. ebXML, RossettaNet.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Data Transport Question
Hello
One of my companies trading partners is requesting we go from X12 3040 to
XML
I know that for details I will need to contact my trading partner, But I
wanted to ask a few question
before I contact them.
1) When useing the XML format does the VAN go away?
2) Is there a document that describes the DTD or Schema for each
transaction?
Thank you in advance for any insight into this.
