Indeed, you found the malefactor !!! 

The simplest workaround is: Do not configure the SOCKS proxy.
I tested the following configuration (>screenshot) and everything worked 
as expected, even the connection to the internet with the authentication 
dialog box and the access to the XMLmind addons site.




I never thougt that the two problems would have the same reason.
