Eric Badger commented on YARN-7129:
-----------------------------------
bq. The majority of consensus is to have inline of the master build to ensure
reproducibility
But why is this enabled by default? For anyone who doesn't want the docker
image, it is just extra overhead in the build which takes time. That's on top
of the fact that it broke my perfectly valid environment. I figured the reason
behind the build breaking was a user permissions issue, but all of the options
that you gave are unacceptable or unnecessary.
bq. 1. Put yourself in docker group, and make sure you have rights to docker
build command.
I do not want to give my user access to the docker group. That should be
reserved for a privileged user, since docker is a daemon running by root.
bq. 2. run start-build-env.sh and do project build inside the docker
environment.
This step is unnecessary. I have never had to build hadoop inside of a docker
environment and this should not be a requirement now.
bq. 3. Shutdown docker to prevent docker image from building.
This is also unnecessary. Why should I have to start and stop my docker
services every time I want to build?
The tl;dr here is that my environment was able to build trunk before this patch
and is not able to build trunk after this patch. My environment was not invalid
and therefore should not be broken unless out of necessity, which I do not
believe is the case here.

> YARN native services provides web services API to improve usability of
> application deployment on Hadoop using collection of docker images. It would
> be nice to have an application catalog system which provides an editorial and
> search interface for YARN applications. This improves usability of YARN for
> manage the life cycle of applications.
