I have read the post on the Save Our SABC group of the Julius Malema's
comments about the media today (the SABC is ours but everyone else can walk
etc.) and Floyd Shivambu's ANCYL press release condemning the Daily Star.

It was a pretty awful story, but I should point out that no-one in Britain
takes the Daily Star seriously. It's the second-lowest quality red-top
tabloid, after the Mirror and the Sun, better only than the Daily Sport,
which can hardly be called a newspaper. The ANCYL should try reading the
Morning Star instead
(http://morningstaronline.co.uk<http://morningstaronline.co.uk/index.php>
).

As comrade Domza VC rightly points out, the Daily Star is a right-wing
newspaper mainly read by members of the lumpen proletariat. It is owned by a
man named Richard Desmond, a former 'barrow boy' (a hawker) from the East
End of London whose main business now is pornography. He bought the Daily
Star so that he could fill it with adverts for his pornographic phone lines
and magazines. Desmond picked up the Daily Express as part of the purchase.
The Express is just as full of right-wing rubbish as the Daily Star but is
marketed to the middle class. It is a carbon-copy of the Daily Mail, which
openly supported the British Union of Fascists in the 1930s.

There is sniping at South Africa from various quarters here. It is part of a
larger imperialist and anti-communist discourse. The critics include black
people, including Wiliam Gumede, a South African who has written a book
about Thabo Mbeki along with his frequent columns for the liberal Guardian
newspaper.

It may be that Julius Malema and co. are picking on easy targets. This press
release is certainly retrospective justification of Malema's outburst
against the BBC's Joshua Fisher. Maybe the media should do as Malema says
and walk, ignoring his press conferences. Maybe that would make him happier
than being quoted like a big-shot in newspapers on the other side of the
world.

As Buti Manamela has pointed out in an oblique way, and Jacob Zuma in a most
direct way, Julius Malema has abandoned the ANC's principle of
non-racialism. He should "go out" of Luthuli House himself and join the PAC
or something.
