Comrade Malekate,

The COSATU 2015 Plan was adopted at the 8th Congress in 2003. On its first
page, the 2015 Plan says:

*“Our vision for 2015 is shaped by the following benchmarks:

“1. Systematic and rigorous implementation of an organisation building
programme, ensuring the recruitment of over four million members, by the
10th National Congress in 2009, with a united working class and depth of
organisation and militancy."*

The following are COSATU's own latest figures of membership:

  *1991***

* 1,212,000 ***

*1994***

* 1,252,000 ***

*1997***

* 1,791,000 ***

*2000***

* 1,869,000 ***

*2003***

* 1,768,000 ***

*2006***

* 1,841,400 ***

*2009***

* 1,974,084 ***

*2010***

*2,022,133***

Two million is the wrong figure, comrade. We were supposed to have more than
four million organised in COSATU unions two years ago already.

COSATU is not delivering. It is ducking its proper job of organising South
Africa's working class and instead, it is indulging in all sorts of
displacement activity, pointing fingers all over the place, and interfering
where it should not be interfering.

You make a good-sounding speech, Cde Malekate. Why don't you go and make
that speech at a factory gate somewhere and see how many workers will stop
to listen to you on their way home? Let alone get organised as a result of
your fine words.

The slogan used to be "Organise, or starve!". Now it seems to be "Organise,
tomorrow."
