Finished the update and yes, my system was killed too. It seems that the ftp-yoper tree (not the devel tree) also has the x86-64 packages instead of the i686 packages. The result was a system that was able to boot, but all fonts were crippled (only square boxes instead of letters) and I was unable to log into the system.
