it turned out that i did a fresh install over again to fix my problem installed grub as bootloader

this is my setup
hda1       /      xfs, first try was with reiserfs (boot)
hda2  reiser for other distro to come-- not in use
hda3  reiser for other distro to come-- not in use
hda4       /home  reiserfs

i did the smart upgrade over until it reported no interesting updates
i rebooted and got the same problem where the bootloader only displays
GRUB           it hangs at this point..
i inserted & boot the installation cd and at the selection menu  i selected c  for commandline

root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
--------> process successful
restart

grub menu now being showed
select yoper 3.0

kernel starts load then whole lot of binary file characters being displayed .... press a key return to grub menu with gibberish being displayed in the space available for the menu options.
pressed d and removed all lines.

press c for cmdline
type  "kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmXXXXXX root=/dev/hda1          <enter>      ##exactly the same as my menu.lst without (hd0,0)
         "boot"                                                                   <enter>

system then loads the kernel properly without any errors. i tried many changes to menu.lst but still it wont go through automatically, i keep having the repeat typeing in the options manually on each reboot. i did a make install with the  kernel sources an it overwrite the boot loader to lilo and thigns running fine now.

it seem therefore that the problem could be grub related

Hi,

the x86_64 thing on the login is rather effectless.

The real problems are :

1) That the large upgrade cannot be done at once but rather in 2-3
steps. You have to do smart upgrade several times until it does not
install any longer new packages.

2) The earlier perl rebuilds have been broken. The last one does work
here. Since yaird ( the mkinitrd replacement ) does rely on perl it
failed earlier.

3) If a new kernel is installed you have to verify manually that there
is a new initrd in /boot/ . Only reboot when you verified this. If not
you have to manually create a new initrd image. Furthermore you have
to add the  new kernel manually to your bootloader. There are ways to
do this automatically . But it only works for grub and lilo anyway.
Also you still have to do this manually if you have an uncommon
bootloader setup.

4) Smart install urw-fonts to solve the squared letters.

I don't know how to get the fonts back, looking nice.

Fabian any ideas ?
