hi,

after all this confusion...im pretty much confused what is the goal of yoper...whether this goal is a fixed one or does it change according to release cycles...

we need a clarity on this issue...andreas has a point to make...we r not strivin to be the next debian...stability can be reached @ somepoint of time...but its not a wise thing to put all the focus and energy to achieve that and be left behind with all the nice things happening in the desktop arena...

i do know we 've lack of developers...but somethings ought to be done wen its need to be...chaks is building a light-weight iso...why not 've a bleeding edge iso with xgl...just an idea...but this depends on the goal & wat iso we r goin to call as yoper's main iso...

and y do ppl comment on technologies in which they 'vent tried their hands with...plz dont assume certain things...its not gud...its nice to pass assumptions...but plz say so that its just an assumption...

im a stranger to yoper devel...but actively monitor u guys develop...ur a bunch of rockin guys...this issue is just a gud reminder for all of u to think abt yoper goals...focus on it...dont let others heg u down...

as far as andreas behaviour...childish...i may want a feature...but in a community based effort it happens with consensus...if everyone is wrong...and ur technically correct or u beleive ur correct...say it politely...ur great...but u can be greater...

tobi...ur our man...keep up the gud work...we don't need to talk much abt this...lets move ahead...take the positives taken from these discussions...and forget the negatives...lets hope everyone will understand the etiquette of a community based devel...

Folks

you know me. I am no enemy of clear words and of action.

Honestly, if the attitude of Yoper developers for Eye Candy is that back wards, we might as well shut Yoper down. I will certainly not put my name on the line for a distro that is:

1.) Unstable
2.) Takes ages to install
3.) Has absolutely no up to date packaging and hardly any interesting packages (no OO!!!)
4.) Does not have the latest Eye Candy
5.) Where developers have left the ideal of taking the best of other distro's and integrate it

I do agree that all the above has to be in a distro. And except XGL, you can find  intetresting apps in Yoper, even now Chris has integrated enlightenment with entrance display manager.I am also in building a Lightweight Desktop Environment ISO, i think i will come up with something in a weeks time....

Are you guys still doing Yoper or would it not be better starting your own distro? Maybe call if Flopper?

well, Yoper is my distro (is it not "ours" ? :) ) !

Saying that Xgl "slows" things down is pretty laughable given the fact that XGL actually uses the Video RAM for its Rendering (and the GPU) and that in itself is more than what your Yoper is doing at the moment.

I have no idea on XGL, so no comments.

I feel Yoper is diverting from its path and given the fact that you published an alpha that does not even install on standard systems (how apalling!), I think that you should review any future release. I will certainly have a word on anything that comes out as after all this is my baby and I will not let my baby run like that.

Well, its better to put that we dont have proper installation mechanism to install in standard machine....we do need to review and come up with a stable version...as of now except for few confusions, installer is coming up with a good shape...

Get my point?

Andreas

For my part, it was an assumption :)  Even KDE slows down a PC compared to
Flux or XFCE - so the added 3d goodness of Xgl is likely to require larger
amounts of memory simply to perform the eye candy side of things.
However, I am open to correction :)
