Since we are headed towards a release, I will weed out that

This whole story just again shows us how easy it is to fall for you own
brilliant theories. We built challenging new stuff, so the bug is bound
to be in the part that costs the most brain cycles -- right??
Yesterday I went through the code clean-up changesets and re-grouped
them thematically, starting with the low-risk and immediate clean-up.
Haven't identified the bug yet, but it can be triangulated now to be
hidden somewhere in the refactorings related to effects and parameters.
