I have just pushed out a draft fix on my "guiconnect" branch, which now

sets the checkbox once the user selects an effect type.

Does this look OK for you?

Yes. That looks OK.
For the sake of consistency ... in insertion effects we should no longer
disable effect selection when set to Off in the destination selector.

Agreed, the same pattern can also applied to the insertion effects.
I have amended my fix accordingly. The logic is slightly different here,
since insertion effects are enabled by inserting them somewhere; so this
is actually a change that should be done when processing the command in
the core. I have implemented it now such as to pre-select "master out"
whenever a slot was not selected and routed previously. But when only
the effect was set to "none", existing routing information is retained.

CMake is something I find mind-numbingly obscure -

CMake is a tremendous disappointment. It set out as a new build system
with the goal to handle things better than autotools; yet a short-sighted
and overly simplistic design of the core system, combined with feature creep
and an attempt to solve also aspects of package management and software
distribution amounted to turn it into an appalling mess.
