Last time that happened to me (Entourage 2004, Mac OS 10.4.11), there was a bad email at the top of the Inbox. I'm not exactly sure how I fixed it. I think I logged into my account with Shift key down, and then opened Entourage, and immediately deleted the top message of the Inbox (sorted by "Date Received").
