MS has installed two Microsoft Auto Updates on both my Macs. One works, and
the other doesn't. But the MAU installation of the working one calls the
other, which interrupts the first.

Confusing?  Not my fault.

On a virgin HD with a fresh installation of MS Office, MS has installed the
following:

1) Microsoft AutoUpdate.app
HD -> Applications ->  Microsoft AutoUpdate.app
[Version 041011 9/22/04]

AND

2) Microsoft AutoUpdate.app
HD -> Library -> Application Support ->
   Microsoft -> MAU2.0 -> Microsoft AutoUpdate.app
[Version 2.2.0 4/9/08]

I read that there are two updaters for MS Office. I open
  HD -> Applications ->  Microsoft AutoUpdate.app
...and it tells me that there are no updates available.

I open Entourage, and do Help -> Check for Updates
...and it finds the two updates.

I run the updater from the second inquiry (through Entourage), and it tells
me there are two updates available. I OK both.

Something then calls one of the updater applications and downloads the two
updates. Upon trying to install, one of the updater applications opens the
other updater application. One of them reports that I must first quit the
updater application to continue with installing. OK, I quit.

Then another updater application tells me I have two updates available, do I
want to download? Yes. It downloads, and another updater application
opens, and tells me I must first quit the updater application.

Round and round it goes. Where it stops? It depends on if I quit the right
updater application in the right order.

Stooooooopid.

I suppose that the correct application to keep is

HD -> Library -> Application Support ->
   Microsoft -> MAU2.0 -> Microsoft AutoUpdate.app

Correct?

On my MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.2 and MS Office 2008, it was a fresh
installation on a virgin HD.

On my iMac with OS 10.6.2 and MS Office 2008, I updated/upgraded from OS
10.4.11 and MS Office 2004.

I could maybe understand why the iMac has two MS Office updater
applications. But why would the MBP have two updater applications, unless
MS had installed them?

Installer BUG.
