This one comes with Office 2004, or the mouse drivers, etc.

This one comes with Office 2008. You can trash the one in /Applications and
keep this one. The other one won’t detect anything for Office 2008 whereas I
believe this one works for everything,

I suspect MS didn’t want to automatically delete the one in /Applications
because it might have supported apps not supported by the new one (or the one
in /Applications got reinstalled after the facts by another installation such
as the mouse drivers — which are not under the control of the MacBU).
