I'm fairly sure that the MS Office 2008 Test Drive was _not_ installed on
this new MacBook Pro.

The only way I can see for MAU 2004 to have been installed is that MS
installed it. I certainly didn't install it.

I understand by the behaviors exhibited in the most recent MS Office updates
that MAU 2004 can not see the updaters for MS Office 2008.

But the statement that I should run only one updater at a time should be
directed to MS. I did run only one updater. MAU 2008 called MAU 2004. MAU
2004 called MAU 2008, and round-and-round. I'd quit one, and it would call
the other. I'd quit the other, and would call the first.

The behavior happened on two different Macs. I'm tellin' ya', there's some
kind of bug in some installer and in the behavior of the MAU applications.
