OK, what is the solution to prevent this catastrophe from reoccurring?

My Inbox HAD approximately 1500 items in it. I know, quite a few but, having
tried various methods of having Entourage sort things into other folders for
me, based on Projects/Rules/Mailing List Managers I gave up on that endeavour
as I ended up with quintuplicates (and more) of messages stashed willy nilly
everywhere.

So, just a few minutes ago Entourage throws an error of 'unable to synchronize
Inbox with server' and goes on to suggest how to solve this be 'clearing the
cache' of the Inbox. So, I do that. Entourage immediately locks up, then goes
into 'Not responding' mode and stays there for minutes, then Quits
unexpectedly.
I restart Entourage and, uh oh.... my Inbox now contains about 200 items, with
the newest one being from March of this year! ACKKKKK!!!!!! If the intent was
for Entourage to arbitrarily clean up and get rid of 'old stuff' that seemingly
I should not be keeping, it failed miserably. It has every appearance of having
deleted my NEW stuff!

Off I go to Time Machine.....
