Dave,

I think you're correct that Spock was portrayed as unemotional and total logic. 
 That's a computer - or as you say a computer-controlled robot.

The important part IMO to remember abou the show was that Kirk was portrayed as 
a human being with very strong emotions.  The two worked together to form a 
very powerful team.

But...Kirk was the captain of the ship - not Spock.
