Mike, Excuse me for butting in. Do you realize you are moving away from zen? By suggesting not climbing the 100ft pole in the first place, you miss the chance of falling into an abyss, which is a requisite for enlightenment, especially with Rinzai. It is always more fun to follow tantra. They ask you, instead of the slippery pole, to climb a nine story building. Then on instructions by the guru, you jump from the top. Of course, the teacher uses his psychic power to bail you out from the free fall. As the story goes. I feel you are on the Theravada route. I wish you good luck. I am not saying which way is the best, or the 'only' way. For my part, I won't climb the pole either, as I am terrified on looking down from the brink of the abyss. Nor do I leap from the nine story building, because all tanttic gurus are too busy doing the sex ritual to bail me out. Anthony

I'm not sure what your response to the 100ft pole koan was, but for me my response (moving beyond what I say above) would be, 'Don't climb the pole in the first place'. Koryu Roshi was a Renzai Zen master and one of Maezumi's teachers from whom Maezumi had received inca. When I started going to ZCLA Koryu Roshi was still there and took some of the students from time to time. I don't know really why when I went I was assigned to Koryu Roshi. Maybe there was some purpose, or maybe he just randomly took the 'overflow' from Maezumi. Anyway he's the one who started me on koan study and with whom I first worked on the koan Mu.
